Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these medications should be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
